Etna, with its imposing presence and disturbing, dominates the landscape of eastern Sicily. With its 3329m is the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps and the largest active volcano in Europe. Its activity is almost constant and eruptions are frequent: the most spectacular come from the four craters of the summit, while the more frequentie most dangerous spring from cracks and old craters on the side of the mountain. This activity, which is monitored closely and steadily from 120 seismic stations and satellites, provides just occasionally the prohibition of access to visitors, for security reasons.
